May 15- August 31, 2017
Gear Up for Epilepsy was inspired by a young cyclist, Charlie, who dreamed of riding with his father across the United States. Unfortunately, he would not be able to accomplish that dream as his ride was cut short by SUDEP (Sudden Unexplained Death from Epilepsy) in August of 2016. Every year, 3,000 people in the United States die from SUDEP.
To celebrate Charlie’s memory, Charlie’s parents, Clif and Arleen will depart on a 2-month cross-country bicycle trek that their son dreamed of accomplishing on June 18th, 2017. Clif and Arleen will be joined by family and friends throughout the trip. The Coast to Coast Charlie Team will cycle 3,712 miles across the United States for Charlie to raise awareness to SUDEP and epilepsy and funds for Epilepsy Foundation.
You can join Athletes vs Epilepsy Gear Up for Epilepsy and select your own cycling trek to help contribute to the miles ridden by the Coast to Coast for Charlie team. It’s simple! If you have a bicycle, you can raise funds, awareness and miles to help lead the fight against epilepsy. Don’t have a bike? Using a stationary bike is another great option to participate in this event!
Here’s how to start gearing up:
- Click the Register Now button
- Select the distance you would like to ride: 10 miles, 26 miles, 56 miles, 72 miles, or the Gear Up Cyclist Warrior (more than 72 miles).
- Create your customized fundraising page and start cycling!
- Register and report your miles through Strava.com. You will receive an email invitation to join the Athletes vs Epilepsy Strava team!
If you register and raise $500 and ride at least 50 miles by June 18, 2017, you will receive an Athletes vs Epilepsy biking jersey!
(Note: Due to production time, bike jerseys will be delivered mid to late July.)
Whether on a stationary bike at the gym, your family’s regular weekend bike ride through the neighborhood, riding to school or work, or your weekly bike groups’ multi-mile trek, you can log your miles, raise funds, and awareness for the 3 million living with epilepsy and those impacted by SUDEP.
